Auto Insurance Quote - Optional Coverages

free auto insurance quote

auto insurance planners roadsOptional coverages are not necessary but may be worth considering if you are not covered under other types of insurance or will have financial difficulty if a particular situation should occur.
  • Medical Payments Coverage - Medical payments coverage pays for medical expenses, regardless of who's at fault, if you and/or passengers in your car are injured in a car accident. Medical payments coverage is relatively inexpensive and can protect you and your passengers in a car accident where injuries are sustained. Compensation is made by your auto insurance company up to the maximum limits of coverage bought.

Medical payments for auto insurance policy coverage pays for medical bills and funeral expenses for the policyholder, household family members, and your passengers in an car accident. Coverage also applies if the insured or household family members are in another vehicle, as pedestrians or as bicyclists and are hit by another car. This coverage is valuable if you have no health insurance or inadequate health insurance coverages.

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP) - PIP covers you and your passengers in an accident by paying for medical expenses, lost of income, loss of service and funeral expense regardless of fault. Personal injury protection is offered by auto insurance companies in some states when you buy an auto insurance policy. However, a few state with no-fault laws require motorists to purchase PIP as part of their auto insurance policy. The rising cost of medical care has made PIP coverage more expensive in recent years. If you carry PIP on your automobile it applies to all autos you insure, and auto insurance companies charge a premium for every auto.

PIP doesn't cover injuries caused by using farm equipment, recreational or off road vehicles. It won't cover intentional injuries to the insured person or if the person is injured in organized racing activities or committing a felony.

PIP covers the insured persons named on the policy, relatives living in the insured's household including spouse, adopted, step or foster children and any passengers in the car. Covered persons are also protected if they were injured in an auto accident as a pedestrian.

  • Car Rental Coverage - Car rental expense coverage reimburses you for the cost of renting a car if your car was damaged in an accident. Renting a car while your car is being repaired due to an accident can run you at least $200 a week. Many auto insurance companies offer rental car reimbursement as an optional auto insurance policy coverage. This coverage helps pay for your rental car expenses if the insured car is being serviced or repaired due to a covered loss. The extra fee for rental car coverage is usually small but it can really help if you will need to rental a car. Car rental coverage typically will reimburse for your costs of renting a car from a rental agency or garage – up to your coverage limits.

Some auto insurance companies may allow you to use the rental car coverage if your car is stolen. Check with your auto insurance agent or auto insurance company on the specifics of rental car coverage.

  • Umbrella Insurance - Umbrella insurance is a second layer of liability insurance in the event that your existing liability insurance has been exhausted. Umbrella insurance usually also covers home-ownership liabilities.

  • Gap Insurance - Gap insurance protects your car in the event that it is stolen or declared a total loss.

  • Rental Car Insurance - Rental car insurance protects you from liability if involved in an accident while driving a rental car.

  • Towing Coverage - Towing coverage provides emergency and towing services in the event of an accident or breakdown. Auto insurance policies do not cover towing or rental car unless you request it and pay an additional fee. The extra fee is usually small but it can really help if your vehicle is damaged or disabled.
